Permanently Ajar

The surrounding white field removes all context. This is perception liberated from perspective.

Permanently Ajar

The work treats the eye not as an organ but as a door: circular, bodily, permanently ajar, and opening onto a darkness. It appears black because perception requires an interior the viewer cannot enter.

The Blakean-Huxleyan notion of perception as a barrier to be cleansed is made literal here.

The red vessels resemble fractures around the entrance. They also prevent the eye from becoming a pure spiritual symbol. Every glimpse of transcendence arrives through wet tissue, electrical impulses, and inherited biases.

Traditionally, the iris regulates admission; Its frozen blue texture suggests shattered glass, mineral growth, or a decorative border placed around oblivion.

What we call seeing is partly reception and partly projection—a collaborative hallucination between matter and need.

The central blackness is not simply emptiness. It is where the image becomes reciprocal. We look into the void and imagine being looked at in return. Whether anything is actually there matters less than our inability to tolerate an unanswered gaze.
