Situationally Unaware

Leopold Aschenbrenner went from obscure prodigy to demigod.

A cult following, roughly 439% gains in the first half of 2026, and the aura that he had understood the future before everyone else. Then came a 67% July loss, margin calls, and the forced sale of much of his public portfolio.
Situational Awareness held heavily leveraged AI positions and suffered substantial losses during "a broader AI sell-off." It then sought capital and sold most or all of its public-equity portfolio to Ken Griffin, also known as Citadel.
Citadel may have profited by acquiring distressed positions. It may also have hedged or shorted related assets. Neither possibility establishes that it caused the collapse.
When you rise that quickly, success stops feeling like something you did and starts feeling like evidence of what you are: exceptional, chosen, historically early. Then the reversal does not register as an ordinary mistake. It feels like a public revocation of personhood. Yesterday, your extremity proved your genius. Today, the same extremity is presented as proof that you were always an idiot.
“Saved” is defensible only in the narrow financial sense: Citadel supplied liquidity, an exit, or both.
The modest and supportable interpretation: Citadel may have been positioned to benefit from the forced liquidation and may have helped contain it. The more satisfying version: that Citadel engineered the losses and then arrived to save him from them, which remains speculation.
And WSB is structurally incapable of resisting that reversal. It turns financial catastrophe into lore within minutes: Wendy’s, liquidation memes, ritual dismemberment of the former golden child. Current threads are already framing him as “situationally unaware” and mocking the entire genius narrative.
